Analysis:
In the trailer for “Miracles from Heaven”, textual features work together to represent ideas about love, sickness, miracles and hope.

Mise-en-scene and sound work together to represent love between the couple and sisters. Many scenes are set in high key lighting framing Anna and her sister’s smiling faces. This suggests she is very much loved by her sisters. As well as this high key lighting is used when Anna or her sisters are around their parents as well, suggesting that they are all a close knit family who love each other very much. As well as this dialogue is used to show Anna’s parent love each other very much. At the start of the trailer they are singing “It’s a good love, it’s a good life” and later on Anna’s mother is asked how long she’s been married and she answers “14 years” with a smug smile on her face.

Mise-en-scene, camera work, editing and sound work together to portray Anna as being weak, sick and fragile. The editing in the middle is very fast paced showing many scenes where proxemics is used to show Anna in the back of shots surrounded by doctors and hospital equipment. This shows she is sick and weak therefore needs the doctor’s help. As well as this Mise-en-scene is used to show her as pale and her costume is mostly a child’s hospital robe.  In the first scene that we see Anna sick Camera work and sound work together to suggest that Anna is fragile and vulnerable. There is a close-up of Anna’s face showing her crying and in pain. AS well as this there is then an acute high angle and Anna says “Mummy it hurts!”

Mise-en-scene, editing and sound work together to show that there is hope and that miracles do happen. After, the trailer shows Anna getting sick the editing slows down in pace showing much longer scenes. This suggests that there is hope as Anna is in scenes for a longer amount of time, suggesting she might live longer than predicted. Dialogue is used to show that a miracle has happened. Anna’s mum says “It healed her? ….. Well that’s impossible” A piece of Non-Diegetic and asynchronous piece of music is also played. It is called Flight Song by Rachel Platten. The lyrics of the song suggest that Anna is a fighter and has lots of hope now that she has recovered. As well as this there is one tracking shot of Anna running. She is in the front of the shot leaving everything behind her. This suggests that Anna is leaving her illness behind and starting a new life where she will be happy and healthy. High key lighting is also used in this scene. This suggests that Anna has a guardian angel watching over her taking care of her.
